what?Improvisation has until recently been a neglected discipline in mainstream UK musical education. There are now good books, CDs, PC and web software available for those wanting to study jazz improvisation at various levels, but there is still a lack of materials relating modal techniques etc to improvisation in “world” or “folk” music forms. More importantly, there are very few practical classes in improvisation of any kind accessible to those who are not full- time students in a handful of schools and colleges. At Jazzcornwall, we aim to use our considerable combined musical/teaching experience to fill that gap; to make this kind of tuition available to people from a wide range of age and ability; and to generally provide support to help Jazz and other improvised music grow and develop. Our program started in May 2007, when we held a well-received workshop on the use of modes in World Music. |
